Vermont Weekend Getaway: 5 Things To Do in the Green Mountain State

With rich agricultural lands, quiet roads, and endless greenery, Vermont is a special place to venture to. There aren’t many places like the Green Mountain State. Known for its maple syrup production, family-friendly ski resorts, and cozy small towns, there’s nothing like a Vermont weekend getaway. As someone who has been going to Vermont for 26 years to ski, hike, and relax, I found these to be the 5 best things to do during a weekend or road trip to rural Vermont.

5. Explore Downtown Burlington

People biking and walking on a path.

If slow isn’t your speed, then take a trip to the city of Burlington, which is the most populated city in the state. With views of Lake Champlain and mountainous landscapes, Burlington is a beautiful city to visit for those who love to shop, eat, and immerse in the local scene. Enjoy walking down the streets, into local book shops and boutiques, through museums and art galleries, and eating at favorite dining spots, such as The Farm House Tap & Grill. My favorite part about this northeast city is Lake Champlain for its outdoor-adventure offerings, such as fishing, paddling, and snowshoeing. Overall, Burlington is the type of city that everyone can enjoy.

4. Check Out Bingham Falls in Stowe

Although Vermont is known for its winter skiing, don’t overlook taking a visit here in the summer. The wildflowers, lush landscapes, and overall tranquility of the state makes it such a beautiful summer spot. In fact, it’s when I prefer to visit. If you’re planning to take a trip to Vermont during the warmer months, then it’s worth doing the short, 0.5-mile hike to Bingham Falls. When there’s no one around, the high-rock walls and clear, glistening water makes you feel like you’re in a faraway, enchanted forest. Even though this is a pretty easy hike, you should still be prepared with proper hiking gear.

3. Hike Camel’s Hump in Waterbury

Whether you are working on completing the New England 4,000 footers or just want to get some outdoor exercise in, then take a spectacular hike to Camel’s Hump. Last fall, I hiked this mountain via Burrows Trail, which is a moderate out-and-back trail that’s gorgeous this time of year from all of the greenery. This is the third highest peak in the state and it offers great views of Mount Mansfield, which is the tallest peak in the state. My friends and I were lucky enough to experience a jaw-dropping undercast at the summit. This hike only takes half a day to complete, so it gives you plenty of time to grab a bite to eat after or relax.

2. Grab a Brew at Lawson’s Finest Liquids in Waterbury

If you’re a local beer and cheese lover, then Lawson’s Finest Liquids is a must-visit spot while in Waterbury. This local brewery began when owner Sean Lawson brewed his first beer, a maple wheat ale, while a student at the University of Vermont in 1990. Now, it’s an award-winning brewery in Vermont that locals and visitors alike absolutely love. Personally, I can never resist a Sip of Sunshine IPA while in the area. The brewery also offers live music events and lots of food options, such as cheese boards and salads.

1. Hit the Slopes at Sugarbush Resort in Warren

Clay Brook Hotel & Residences at Sugarbush.

I’ve probably been to Sugarbush Resort about 50 times, yet it never gets old. My dad is a big skier and got me into the sport at a young age. When I turned 19, I switched to snowboarding (sorry Dad). We love exploring Sugarbush Resort because it offers 111 trails across Lincoln Peak and Mount Ellen, amazing views of Mad River Valley, and fun ways to wind down, such as around a fire pit outside or by grabbing a drink at Castlerock Pub. I also love coming up to Clay Brook Hotel and Residences in the summer with my friends to hike, hit the hot tub, and have a great time.

Vermont is truly a wonderful place that everyone can enjoy. Outdoor enthusiasts can hit the slopes or trails while night owls can walk through the city of Burlington for food and entertainment. Personally, nothing beats the feeling of driving up I-89 North knowing I’m about to spend a relaxing weekend in one of my favorite states. I hope this guide helped you with planning your next Vermont weekend getaway!
